Our house, in the middle of our street

Our house

We bought this!  We will probably get the keys today.  Note to Michiganders:  It has a guest room.  :)

I need a sewing machine

Ah, another project for the day I learn how to operate a sewing machine:

Scrabble pillows!  Placed on wooden tile racks!  And in the same vein, a Scrabble quilt:

And for the day I learn to operate a loom, the official Scrabble area rug!

Of course, all of these things together might make the living room a little busy.

Josh's Wedding

My cousin Josh married his sweetheart Melanie yesterday.  They were married at Shakespeare Garden in Golden Gate Park, with the reception at Beach Chalet (a restaurant on the edge of the park, across from the ocean).  I wish we could have stayed forever.  We need someone else to get married now, just so we can all hang out together again.

Something I never realized about Shakespeare Garden:  All of the flowers from Shakespeare's sonnets and plays are represented there.

Olivia and Sofia with baby daisies:

We caught up with Alison Ann at the reception:

Please, someone get married so we can do this again!

Book Bag

I have a canvas tote bag that I use for hauling books to and from the library.  One day far into the future, when I have a few extra hours on my hands and when I'm immensely capable with a sewing machine, I'd like to make one of these:

I'm thinking one of the kids' books would be great for this (maybe The Lorax or The Giving Tree -- because by the time I get around to making one, they'll be reading Tolstoy and Faulkner).

More info on the book bag (and all sorts of delightful projects) can be yours-all-yours via Curbly.com.

Anakin and the Padres

 JuniperoSerra-wanakin hood

Left:  Padre Junipero Serra.  Right:  Anakin Skywalker.  (Nice outfit.)

In the late 18th/early 19th century, Indians were captured by Spanish padres and forced to live at Missions on the Spanish-settled California coast.  As you are probably aware, padres were priests; padre is Spanish for "father."  I began to explain this to Olivia, who is just a Kindergartener.  It went like this:

Mom:  The padres were from Spain, and they were supposed to be like pastors.

Olivia:  Oh, like Anakin and the padres.

Mom:  Mm, what do you mean?

Olivia:  You remember, from Star Wars I.

Mom:  I don't remember...

Olivia:  You don't remember when Anakin won the padres?!

Mom:  Ah.  The padres were a little different from the pod race.

Olivia:  Oh.

Note to self:  Work on Spanish accent.
